It began with Old Houses Japan — a quiet passion project born from wandering Japan's back roads and discovering the traditional properties that most people had forgotten. Thatched-roof kominka tucked into mountain valleys. Lattice-front machiya lining narrow Kyoto lanes. Akiya sitting empty in fishing villages, waiting for someone to care again.

We started sharing these houses online, and something unexpected happened. People from around the world fell in love with them. Buyers from the US, the UK, Australia, France, Singapore — they found their dream property in a country they'd visited once or twice, signed the papers, and became owners of a piece of Japan.

Then came the hard part. Owning a house 6,000 miles away is not the same as living in one. The roof tiles shift in a typhoon and there's nobody to notice. The garden overgrows until the neighbors complain. The tax notices arrive in Japanese and sit unopened. Slowly, the houses these owners loved so much began to deteriorate — not from neglect of spirit, but from the sheer impossibility of being present.

We watched it happen enough times that we couldn't just keep listing houses. We had to start caring for them too.
