Rainy-season (tsuyu) checklist against mould

梅雨のカビ対策 · Late May, before the rainy season startsFrom early June to mid-July most of Japan is wet and humid. A closed house traps that moisture — this keeps tatami, futons and timber dry.

Before it starts

Set up a dehumidifier with continuous drainage (aim for 50–60%)
Put a hygrometer in the main room to see the humidity
Store futons and cushions in breathable covers, off the floor
Leave closet (押し入れ) doors slightly open
Check the bathroom extractor fan works

During the season

Air the house on dry days — windows and closets open for a few hours
Check tatami, wooden ceilings and north-facing walls for spots
Treat any mould early before it spreads
Clear drains and gutters after heavy rain
