野尻湖Chubu
Lake Nojiri, in the town of Shinano in northern Nagano, has had a summer cottage community started by foreign missionaries since the 1920s, and many of those wooden cottages are still passed down through families abroad. The lake is also known for the Naumann elephant fossils found on its shore, and the haiku poet Kobayashi Issa was born nearby.
This is heavy snow country below Mount Kurohime and Mount Myoko, so cottages that are used for a few weeks in summer sit empty under deep snow for the rest of the year. MonoHaus opens and closes cottages for the season, keeps an eye on them through the winter, and reports to owners abroad in English.

地域の特徴Local know-how
Snow here can lie deep from December into spring. We drain water systems before winter, check that roofs and verandas are coping with the weight, arrange snow clearing where it's needed, and visit after heavy falls.
Cottages used for a short summer season need opening up before you arrive and closing properly when you leave. We air, clean and switch everything on beforehand, and afterwards shutter, drain and photograph the cottage so you know how it was left.
