Shoji and fusuma 障子・襖(shōji, fusuma)

Shoji are lattice frames covered in translucent paper that let light through; fusuma are opaque panels used as room dividers and closet doors. Both are re-papered rather than replaced. Sliding doors that suddenly stick can also be a sign the house frame has moved — worth checking after an earthquake.
